My Approach to Performance
As a Korean in the United States, I believe that I have a unique perspective about the role and power of music in society and how music can reveal to people their common humanity in spite of our cultural differences. As a performer, I believe that we are the instruments of music itself. Although we re-create music in our interpretation of it, performers ultimately are second to the beauty, insight, and wonder that is the music itself. It is my hope to connect with the audience without the limitations of language and reach into their hearts to share the joy, beauty, and wonder that is inherent in music.
As someone interested in both historical and theoretical research on compositions, I also want the audience to imagine the composers’ perspectives on their music. In these explanations, I hope the audience will be able to understand the historical, cultural, and musical context of the work to which they will listen. Hopefully this will not only enhance the audience’s understanding of the performance, but it will make them appreciate the more general role of music and its power in society.
