The questions that I am frequently asked...
How did you start the piano?
I started when I was in kindergarten. I had followed one of my kindergarten friends to her piano lesson and started answering questions from her piano teacher and played the piano. The teacher later called my mother and convinced her to let me start taking piano lessons. In fact, my mother was hesitant because we have a large family and, in Korea, music lessons are expensive. I am very thankful to my teacher, who not only introduced me to the piano but also provided me a solid musical foundation and later prepare me for competitions and performances.
How many siblings do you have? Do you have other sibling to play other music instrument as well?
I have four siblings: three sisters and one brother. However, I am the only child who became a musician, with the rest of my siblings studying science. I think that my musical sense comes from my mother, who had studied modern ballet in college. She is a very sensitive, imaginative, and aristic person. But I also want to credit my father, who was a college professor, and emphasized the importance and value of education.
How were you interested in teaching?
I grew up around teachers and professors, so it is very natural for me to have a genuine interest to help the younger generation do better than the current one. In that sense, I am very grateful to my parents and my previous teachers. Because of them, music became part of my life. I would love to have students experience music as I did. This probably explains my philosophy of teaching as fostering individual personal growth and a love of music.
Who is your favorite composer?
I change my mind so often, it is difficult to say. But I do love the harmony in Schumann's music; the philosophical depth in Beethoven's; the pure and heavenly beauty in Mozart's; and the expanding tone and color in Debussy and Ravel.
